Collagen
Collagen is part of our skin's natural support system. The collagen layer thins with aging as well as other factors such as exposure to environmental elements and heredity. The thinning of this collagen layer causes wrinkles and lines wherever the skin moves.
Collagen replacement therapy® is a safe non-surgical treatment that helps smooth facial lines, wrinkles and scars by replenishing the skin's collagen layer.
- How does Collagen Replacement Therapy (CRT), work?
- Zyderm® and Zyplast® implants are natural substances derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen. These implants are injected just beneath the skin's surface to plump or fill the depressed areas, where the body accepts it as it's own. The effect of CRT can be seen immediately with little or no redness or swelling.
- How do I know if Collagen Replacement Therapy is for me?
- CRT is proven, non-surgical treatment simple enough to be completed on your lunch hour at our office. It's important to discuss your treatment expectations with Dr. Cattell or one of his associates. Together, you can review your medical history, the risks and benefits of treatment and specific areas you want treated. Collagen implants may not be appropriate for certain lines and scars, or with the presence of some medical conditions. However, for most people, Collagen Replacement Therapy is a safe, convenient and immediate way to treat lines and wrinkles.
- What areas can be treated with injectable collagen implants?
- As stated earlier, collagen implants are used to smooth lines, wrinkles and correct scars. Areas most commonly treated are oral commissures (the lines around the mouth), glabellar line (frown line) and nasolabial folds (lines between nose and corner of the mouth). The upper and lower lip border is frequently treated to enhance its definition.

Vertical Lip Lines (Perioral Lines): Before and After

Marionette Lines (Oral Commissures): Before and After

Deep Smile Lines (Nasolabial Furrows): Before and After
- What is the procedure for CRT?
- A simple skin test to determine sensitivity (allergy) to the product, must be administered prior to the implant injection. A small amount of product is injected just under the skin of your forearm, then observed over a two week period. A second skin test is administered if the first is negative and evaluated again over the next two weeks. Approximately 97% of men and women tested show no reaction to the skin test and are eligible for treatment. With a negative skin test, collagen replacement therapy can be initiated.
Zyderm® and Zyplast® implants are injected to the area with a fine gauge needle. Both implants contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic which provides a numbing effect with the injection.
- What can I expect from my treatment?
- Full correction, complete smoothing of wrinkles and or lines, is the goal of CRT. It's important to understand that treatment with collagen is highly individual. The same site treated in two different patients may require different amounts of collagen to achieve the same results. The amount of collagen required for full correction will depend on your age, skin conditions, and the amount of sun damage present.
- How long will collagen replacement therapy last?
- Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen will breakdown over time. Most patients can expect to see the results of their treatment for three to six months. The area of the collagen implant, the amount of collagen used and the amount of muscle movement in the treated area, are all factors that affect rate of the collagen breakdown. Patients, along with their doctor, can design a personalized program to customize treatments to individual needs and results.
