Skin Rejuvenation

Skin Rejuvenation refers to a variety of therapies and products used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, the loss of elasticity, and uneven pigmentation due to aging, sun-damage and environmental effects. The market is currently flooded with several different treatments and products for skin rejuvenation. A personal cosmetic consultation is scheduled to explain the various treatments for skin rejuvenation. Skin rejuvenation is best achieved through the home use of glycolic acid skin care products, in combination with in office chemical peels. Depending on the amount and type of skin damage, the addition of a retinoid product may also prove beneficial.

Cosmetic Consultations

Because cosmetic therapy is very individualized, a cosmetic consultation is recommended prior to beginning any treatment. Through the consultation, we will identify your needs and goals, and develop a plan of treatment specifically for you. The consultation includes an interview to determine skin type, a skin exam to rule out any medical conditions requiring attention first and a detailed explanation of recommended therapies.

Glycolic Acid Skin Care Products

Alpha Hydroxy Acids, AHA's, are naturally occurring substances that loosens the bond between dead superficial skin cells. By altering this bond, the body's natural sloughing process is enhanced, thus allowing new, softer, smoother skin to emerge for healthier looking skin. The free acid value/bioavailibilty of a product is directly related to how effective the product is. The optimum concentration of free acid values, FAV, for cosmetics is between 5 and 30 percent.

M.D. Forté Products sold in department stores contain much lower concentrations of free acids and, therefore, are of limited benefit. In our office, we offer Glytone® and M.D. Forté®, with FAV between 8 and 20 percent in their home skin care products. Glytone® and M.D. Forté® are designed as a complete skin care programs for home use that may be used alone or in conjunction with an in office peel to accelerate results. (In office chemical peels have an acid concentration of 30 to 70 percent.)

The home glycolic skin care systems we carry consists of a facial cleanser, a moisturizer and an exfoliant. These products are offered in several different strengths, as well as a lotion, cream or gel. Our staff is trained to determine which products are best suited to your needs and skin type.

Chemical Peels

Glycolic chemical peels are used to rejuvenate sun-damaged skin by removing areas of blotchy pigmentation and softening of fine lines and wrinkles. The chemical acts as an irritant to the superficial skin layers, and provides a more uniform exfoliation, shedding, to occur. This exfoliation results in a new layer of healthy looking skin to be exposed. Studies have shown, that peels with higher acid concentration increase collagen production and skin's moisture content and may reverse precancerous cells due to sun-damage.

Our office offers several types of glycolic chemical peels containing Alpha hydroxy acid or Beta hydroxy acid for skin rejuvenation, with acid concentrations of 30 to 70 percent. Trained personnel will determine which peel is right for you. Two weeks prior to beginning glycolic acid peels, patients should begin a home glycolic skin care program. (Consultation regarding the use of home products is available at our office.) Peels are performed by applying an acidic solution to the skin for a period of 1 to 10 minutes. The initial peel has a low acid concentration and a short contact time with the skin. However, a series of 4 to 6 peels is recommended, so that the acid concentration and contact time can be increased for maximum results. Unlike other chemical peels, glycolic acid peels are non-toxic and result in little or no recover time. In fact, many patients choose to have their peel over their lunch hour.

Retinoids

There are several retinoids, all derived from vitamin A. Clinical trials have documented topical use of retinoids can reverse structural and functional changes of the skin due to sun damage. The Food and Drug Administration has approved these products for use in treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation and skin texture. Positive effects may be noticed after a few months of treatment, but maximum improvement is usually seen after 6 months. Renova and Affirm are the two most commonly prescribed retinoid product.
