Vein Therapy

Vein Laser Therapy Many people are bothered by spider veins—those small, unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins that usually appear on thighs, calves and faces. The techniques most used to treat spider veins are sclerotherapy and/or laser surgery. Spider veins on the face can be treated with lasers and leg spider veins can be treated with sclerotherapy. Both are relatively simple procedures with minimal discomfort.

Diolite Laser

  1. How does the laser work on my facial spider veins?
  2. A laser generates an intense beam of light. The laser light causes destruction to the vessel you are having treated while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

  3. Is the procedure painful?
  4. Some patients report feeling a slight stinging sensation during the treatment, however, it is not necessary to use topical anesthetic.

  5. What is recovery from Diolite Laser Therapy like?
  6. Following the treatment, redness is noted which usually disappears in 2-4 hours. Some swelling may also be experienced and may last 1-2 days.

    Vascular Lesion

  7. How long before I see the results?
  8. Final treatment results should be evident within 10-14 days after treatment for vascular lesions.

  9. What are the risks associated with laser?
  10. Possible complications are noted but rare: Minimal pain during treatment, occasional swelling or crusting over the treated areas, pigment changes, scarring and possible recurrence of treated lesions.

Sclerotherapy

  1. How does sclerotherapy work on the spider veins on my legs?
  2. Sclerotherapy is an injection of a concentrated sodium chloride solution. This solution is injected into the vessels with a very fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel causing a clot and scar to form. Therefore, it is absorbed by the surrounding tissue.

  3. How effective is sclerotherapy?
  4. Most individuals can expect up to 80% improvement in spider veins with sclerotherapy. Multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

  5. What are the treatments like?
  6. The treatments usually last about 20 minutes. During the procedure you will receive several injection with a very small needle into the source of your spider veins. There is usually minimal burning and itching at the injection sites, which are short of duration, however discomfort does not last long.

  7. What is recovery like?
  8. Usually there is some soreness and itching at the injection sites for the first day. After that, there is often increased sensitivity at the sites, which lasts for a few days.

  9. How long will it take before I notice the results?
  10. Over approximately 4 weeks, the vessel turns in to scar tissue that fades eventually becoming barely noticeable or invisible.

  11. What are the risks associated with sclerotherapy?
  12. Usual and possible results can be: Pain or stinging upon injection, discoloration of the skin, swelling of the injected limb, muscle cramps which usually resolve within 15 minutes after injection, blisters secondary to compression, and the appearance of new or previously treated vessels. Rare complications may include: skin ulceration, allergic reaction to the sclerosing agent, scarring, inflammation of the veins with blood clot formation, nerve damage and accidental injection of an artery.
